Dealing with a furnace that keeps turning on and off in Ruckersville, VA can be extremely frustrating. There are several potential reasons why your heating system is short cycling. If your furnace struggles to stay on, it’s likely due to one of these five reasons.

1. Faulty Thermostat

A malfunctioning thermostat will incorrectly signal the furnace to turn off, even if your home has not reached the target temperature. When this happens, the thermostat will then signal the heating system again to turn back on to get your home to heat to the proper temperature. When it receives these mixed signals, it continually turns on and off.

2. Blocked Ventilation

Blocked vents or ductwork disrupt the proper flow of air, which causes the furnace to overheat. When this happens, the heating system will shut off as a safety precaution and then turn back on shortly thereafter as it tries to heat your home to the set temperature.

3. Ignition Problems

Issues with a furnace’s ignition system, such as a faulty igniter or pilot light, can lead to intermittent heating cycles. When there is an issue with the ignition system, your heating system will shut down immediately to prevent any gas accumulation.

4. Bad Blower Motor

Your furnace’s blower motor circulates the heated air generated by your heating system throughout your home. A failing blower motor often leads to a heating system shutting on and off repeatedly as it tries to reach the temperature you set on your thermostat.

5. Clogged Flue

A clogged flue is another common cause of furnace short cycling. Pests or birds can make their way into your flue which will cause the furnace to shut down so that carbon monoxide doesn’t spread throughout your home.
